The original scripturizer is a javascript that was available online for a while. It was easy to add to a web page and it would do its work "on the fly" thus leaving the page unchanged. This worked for the most part. However, it had a tendency to screw things up by generating some false positives and negatives.
The PHP versions, on this site, make changes to the document by adding a valid anchor tag whenever it finds a scripture reference. Having tried to create a few javascript and XML based systems for automatically finding and linking scripture references, I have come to the conclusion that the best way to insure comparability with all browsers is to use the humble anchor (<a></a>).
The main reason for the creation of the scripturizer is to add links to documents that were created before biblegateway.com was available.
